Boğaziçi University, Department of Western Languages and Literatures announces its Third Undergraduate Conference: Democracy and Civil Rights in Literature.

The conference theme “Democracy and Civil Rights” opens to discussion the conceptualization of democracy and civil rights, their violations and protests against intolerance in literature.

Paper topics may be in one or more of the following fields:

  • Modern Literature
  • Contemporary Literature
  • Literatures of the Earlier Periods
  • African-American Literature
  • Colonial Literature
  • Postcolonial Literature
  • Feminist Literature
  • Queer Literature

And may address issues including but not limited to;

  • Utopia/Dystopia
  • Gender politics
  • Identity politics
  • Human rights, equality and freedom
  • Ancient Political Thought on Democracy and Civil Rights
  • Democracy and the Rule of Law
  • Totalitarianism
  • Corruption and Governance in New Democracies
  • Race and civil rights
  • Civil rights across the ages
  • War and violence
  • Children’s Rights
  • Migration and Diaspora
  • Non-human rights

We welcome proposals 15-minute papers addressing the conference topic. Please submit abstracts of min. 200 words, accompanied by a short bio-note and 5-6 keywords, by February 15 to:

Notification of acceptance will be sent by the 1st of March. Accepted applicants will be asked to send their completed papers by April 10, 2017.
